The compatibility gotcha is the flue tile offset. Signs Your Famco Crown Repair Is Failing

• Water stains on the ceiling near the chimney breast. The crown’s primary job is to shed water away from the flue opening and the masonry below. When cracks develop in a Famco crown, water follows the path of least resistance straight down the flue chase, often appearing as a brown stain on the plaster or drywall below. In Easton’s freeze-thaw climate, a crack that opens in October can funnel gallons of water before spring.
• Spalling or flaking brick on the chimney exterior below the crown. This happens when crown cracks allow water to saturate the top course of brick; the water freezes, expands, and pops the brick face off. • Crumbling mortar at the crown-to-brick joint. Famco crowns are sealed to the top course with a mortar wash or sealant joint that hardens and shrinks over time. A failing crown lets humid air and rainwater into the flue, and that moisture sits in the smoke chamber all summer. By August, the firebox smells like a wet basement. The fix is the crown, not a deodorizer.
